Dog bites are a serious issue, with nearly five million people in the US falling victim each year, according to the World Health Organization1.
But which breeds are most likely to leave a mark? A new study has shed light on this burning question, and the results might surprise you.
According to researchers at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, the breed responsible for the highest percentage of reported bites is not the one you might expect. In fact, it’s the “unknown” category that tops the list2.
“Unknown Dogs” & Factors that Influence Bitey-ness
You might be wondering, what exactly are these mysterious “unknown dogs” that top the list of biters? According to the study’s lead author, Dr. Garth F. Essig, “We often didn’t know what type of dog was involved in these incidents, [so] we looked at additional factors that may help predict bite tendency when breed is unknown.”
These additional factors included weight and head shape.
The findings showed that dogs weighing between 66 and 100 pounds with short, wide heads were the most likely to bite. This suggests that physical characteristics, rather than breed alone, can play a significant role in a dog’s propensity to bite.
But when it comes to breeds with a clear identity, there are definitely some popular breeds that popped up in the list:
1. Pit Bulls: The Notorious Nibblers
The study found that pit bulls were responsible for the highest percentage of reported bites across all the studies, at a staggering 22.5%. Their powerful jaws and muscular build make their bites particularly damaging.
It’s important to note that pit bulls have been historically trained for dogfighting, which might have exacerbated their aggressive tendencies. But with proper training and socialization, many pit bulls can be loving and gentle companions.
2. Mixed Breeds: A Surprising Second Place
Coming in at a close second, mixed breed dogs accounted for 21.2% of reported bites in the study. This finding highlights the importance of considering a dog’s individual temperament and history, rather than relying solely on breed stereotypes.
Mixed breed dogs can inherit a variety of traits from their parent breeds, making their behavior more unpredictable. Proper socialization and training are crucial for all dogs, regardless of their genetic makeup.
3. German Shepherds: Loyal but Liable
German Shepherds, often employed as police and military dogs, claimed the third spot on the list, responsible for 17.8% of reported bites. Their protective instincts and strong bite force can make them formidable opponents if not properly trained and socialized.
4. Terriers: Small but Mighty
Terriers pack a powerful punch when it comes to biting. According to the study, terriers were among the top breeds responsible for reported bites. Their tenacious and energetic nature can sometimes translate into aggressive behavior if not properly channeled.
5. Rottweilers: Powerful Protectors
Rottweilers, known for their strength and loyalty, also made the list of top biting breeds. Their powerful jaws and protective instincts can make them formidable guardians, but without proper training and socialization, they can become aggressive.
Like many large breeds, Rottweilers require dedicated owners who are willing to invest time and effort into their training and socialization.
Responsible Ownership is Key
It’s important to remember that any dog, regardless of breed, can bite under certain circumstances. Factors such as teasing, lack of socialization, and improper training can all contribute to aggressive behavior.
As responsible dog owners, it’s our duty to ensure our furry friends receive the care, training, and attention they need to be well-adjusted members of society.
So, the next time you find yourself face-to-face with a wagging tail, remember: it’s not just the breed that matters, but the individual dog and the environment in which they were raised.
