Appearance: Wingspan of 3.5-4 inches. Orange wings with black veins and white spots.
Habitat: North America, famous for annual migrations.

Monarchs are known for their incredible migration, traveling thousands of miles from the U.S. and Canada to overwinter in Mexico. They use the sun’s position and Earth’s magnetic field to navigate.

The Monarch’s bright colors warn predators that they are poisonous due to toxins ingested from milkweed plants as caterpillars. They are considered an iconic species and a symbol of resilience, but their populations have declined significantly in recent years due to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change.

3. Glasswing Butterfly (Greta oto)

Appearance: Wingspan of 2.2-2.4 inches. Transparent wings with opaque white, brown, or black borders.
Habitat: Central and South America.

The Glasswing’s transparent wings are an adaptation that allows them to camouflage against their background, making them difficult for predators to spot. When resting on leaves, their wings can appear green due to the reflection of the foliage. In some regions, the Glasswing is believed to represent departed loved ones visiting from the afterlife.

4. Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charithonia)

Appearance: Wingspan of 2.75-4 inches. Elongated black wings with yellow stripes.
Habitat: Southern U.S. through South America.

Zebra Longwings have a unique adaptation – they can digest pollen, which provides them with additional nutrients and extends their lifespan up to 6 months, much longer than most butterflies.

They also have a mutualistic relationship with passion flower vines; the butterflies lay their eggs on the vines, and the caterpillars feed on the leaves. In turn, the adult butterflies pollinate the flowers. The Zebra Longwing is the official state butterfly of Florida. (ref)

5. Peacock Butterfly (Aglais io)

Appearance: Wingspan of 2-2.5 inches. Mahogany wings with large eyespots resembling peacock feathers.
Habitat: Europe and Asia.

The Peacock butterfly’s eyespots serve as a defense mechanism, startling and deterring potential predators. When threatened, they can also emit a hissing sound by rubbing their wings together. In some folklore, the eyespots are believed to symbolize the evil eye, warding off bad luck.

6. Emerald Swallowtail (Papilio palinurus)

Appearance: Wingspan of 3.5-4.5 inches. Dark green upper wings with emerald band, gray undersides with colorful spots.
Habitat: Southeast Asia.

The Emerald Swallowtail’s green coloration is produced by structural coloration rather than pigments, resulting from the microscopic scales on their wings diffracting light. This adaptation helps them blend in with the lush green foliage of their habitat.

In some Asian cultures, the Emerald Swallowtail is considered a symbol of good fortune and prosperity.

7. Leopard Lacewing (Cethosia cyane)

Appearance: Wingspan of 3-3.5 inches. Orange wings with intricate brown leopard-like spots.
Habitat: Southeast Asia.

The Leopard Lacewing’s striking wing patterns serve as a warning to predators, indicating that they are unpalatable due to the toxic chemicals they sequester from their host plants.

In some regions, the Leopard Lacewing is associated with the arrival of the monsoon season.

8. Cairns Birdwing (Ornithoptera euphorion)

Appearance: Female wingspan up to 6 inches. Males iridescent green/black, females duller.
Habitat: Tropical rainforests of northeastern Australia.

The Cairns Birdwing exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males and females having distinct color patterns. Males are more brightly colored to attract mates, while females are larger in size.

These butterflies have a symbiotic relationship with Aristolochia vines; the females lay their eggs on the vines, and the caterpillars feed exclusively on them, sequestering toxins that make the adult butterflies unpalatable to predators. The Cairns Birdwing is protected by law in Australia. (ref)

9. Malachite Butterfly (Siproeta stelenes)

Appearance: Wingspan of 3.5-4 inches. Vivid green wings with black stripes and spots.
Habitat: Southern U.S. through Central/South America.

The Malachite’s green coloration serves as an effective camouflage in their forest habitats, helping them blend in with the lush foliage. Their wing patterns also act as a warning to predators, signaling that they are unpalatable due to the toxins they acquire from their host plants.

10. Ulysses Butterfly (Papilio ulysses)

Appearance: Wingspan of 4-5 inches. Bright blue wings with black edges, males more colorful.
Habitat: Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

The iridescent blue color of the Ulysses Butterfly’s wings is created by the microscopic scales that reflect light in a way that creates the shimmering effect. The butterfly is also known for its ability to fly long distances, often covering several kilometers in a single day.

11. Red Lacewing (Cethosia biblis)

Appearance: Wingspan of 3-3.5 inches. Scarlet red wings with black markings, females duller.
Habitat: South and Southeast Asia.

The Red Lacewing’s bright red coloration serves as an aposematic signal, warning predators of their unpalatability due to the toxic chemicals they acquire from their host plants. Interestingly, the red pigment in their wings is derived from the flavonoids in their diet.

12. Sylphina Angel (Chorinea sylphina)

Appearance: Wingspan of 1.5-2 inches. Translucent white wings with brown veins and edges.
Habitat: Cloud forests of the Andes mountains.

The Sylphina Angel’s translucent wings are an adaptation that allows them to camouflage against the misty background of their cloud forest habitat. Their wing patterns resemble dried leaves, providing additional camouflage when resting.

Due to their specialized habitat requirements, they are vulnerable to climate change and habitat loss.

13. Leopard Butterfly (Phalanta phalantha)

Appearance: Wingspan of 3.5-4.5 inches. Iridescent blue wings with black stripes and white spots.
Habitat: Southeast Asia.

Blue Clipper Butterflies are known to migrate in large numbers, often forming impressive swarms. These butterflies are also known to exhibit a behavior called “mud-puddling,” where they congregate around wet soil or mud to absorb minerals.

15. Sapho Longwing (Heliconius sapho)

Appearance: Wingspan of 2.5-3 inches. Dark brown wings with bright blue streaks.

Habitat: Rainforests of Central America.

The Sapho Longwing’s blue coloration is a form of mimicry, allowing them to resemble the toxic Heliconius butterflies and avoid predation. They also have a mutualistic relationship with passion flower vines; the adults lay their eggs on the vines, and the caterpillars feed on the leaves.
