10 Brilliant White Dog Breeds With a Genetic Secret

Have you ever wondered why some dogs have brilliant white coats? The answer lies in their genetics and a gene called MITF that regulates pigment development.

Research1 from Uppsala University in Sweden found that mutations in this gene impact how it’s regulated, preventing some pigment cells from making it to areas of a dog’s skin during development – resulting in white fur instead of color.

But since pigment cells also influence the inner ear, breeds with extreme white spotting like white Boxers are prone to hearing issues. It’s a prime example of how selective breeding over many generations has allowed humans to shape dogs’ appearances through genetic changes.

Here are some of the most beautiful white dog breeds everyone should know about.

While white dogs are beautiful, there are some potential health issues to be aware of in certain breeds:

  • Deafness or hearing impairment due to lack of pigment in the inner ear (white Boxers, Dalmatians)
  • Orthopedic problems, bloat (larger breeds like Great Pyrenees, Kuvasz)
  • Dental issues (smaller breeds like Maltese)
  • Respiratory problems (brachycephalic breeds like Bichon Frise)
  • Skin issues
