Most homeowners put this off because they assume it’s complicated. It isn’t.

Why Measuring Matters

Guessing leads to crooked fits, uneven gaps, and wasted money. A few quick measurements make the difference between frustration and a perfect custom fit.

Affordable Blinds provides everything: a printable worksheet, a short video, and clear step-by-step instructions. I distilled it all here so you can skip confusion and get results.

The 7-Step Window Blind Measuring Checklist

Based directly on Affordable Blinds’ instructions.

  1. Choose your mount style. Inside mounts look built-in and modern. Outside mounts make windows appear larger.
  2. Inside-mount width. Measure the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest width.
  3. Outside-mount width. Measure the full area you want covered, then add two to three inches on each side for better light control.
  4. Measure height. Take three vertical measurements—left, center, right—and record the largest number.
  5. Check frame depth. Ensure the recess is deep enough for brackets, usually around two inches.
  6. Use a metal tape measure. Cloth or flexible tape stretches and throws off accuracy.
  7. Write it down. Use the worksheet so you don’t mix up width and height or confuse rooms.

That’s it. Seven steps, no calculations, no guesswork.

Installation Confidence

When your blinds arrive, follow the installation instructions.

You’ll need a drill, level, Phillips screwdriver, and the included brackets. Each blind type has a diagram showing exact bracket placement.

If you’ve ever built flat-pack furniture, this will feel easier.

The Real Blocker

What keeps most people stuck isn’t the task. It’s hesitation—the fear of measuring wrong. The guide helps removes that risk. Every measurement has a check step, and every diagram shows what “right” looks like.

Once you take the first measurement, the hesitation disappears. You realize you can handle this. And once you do, other small projects start to look possible too. Progress builds momentum fast.
