Weeding is often seen as a laborious, back-breaking task, but it doesn’t have to be. The TikTok DIY couple @plankandpillow have brought to light a garden gadget that makes weeding a breeze and saves your back from the task of bending over.
The tool, called Grampa’s Weeder, is incredibly simple. It features a long handle with a set of sharp prongs at the end that latch under the base of the weed.
A foot lever lifts the weed from the ground when you step on it, making the process of weeding effortless.
Grampa’s Weeder
Despite its recent appearance on @plankandpillow’s TikTok, Grampa’s Weeder isn’t a new invention. This handy tool has been around since 1913.
Originally invented in Seattle, it quickly became the best way to pull weeds and a must-have tool for gardeners. However, production ceased in 1941 due to the war effort requiring all available metals.
It wasn’t until 1999 that production resumed when a couple rediscovered this unique tool. Today, you can purchase Grampa’s Weeder from its official website for about $40.ย
It’s also available at Walmart, Ace Hardware, and Amazon.
In addition to the long-handled Weeder, the company also sells a hand weeder and a multipurpose hook that functions as a cultivator, hand tiller, Weeder, and edging tool.
Other Ways To Get Rid of Weeds
If you’re physically fit and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you can always pull weeds the traditional way. But why risk straining your back?
When it comes to weeding, prevention is better than cure. The sooner you start, the better.
Mulching is a simple and attractive way to suppress weed growth. You can use various materials, such as wood chippings, straw, compost, or processed bark.
Composting not only helps control weeds but also improves soil structure and stimulates beneficial organisms.
Another method, albeit more labor-intensive, is to line your garden with a weed-proof material before adding soil or gravel. You can even repurpose old plastic shower curtains to line your garden beds, helping to reduce household waste while preventing weed growth.
Remember, weeds are prolific growers. When disposing of weeds, try to do so in a way that prevents seeds from spreading. They’ll quickly take root if given the chance.
How Not To Pull Weeds
Weeds can be a gardener’s worst enemy, but tackling them the wrong way can do more harm than good.
Firstly, it’s time to ditch the chemicals. Synthetic weed killers might effectively eliminate dandelions, but they could also harm vital bee populations.
Secondly, even when using a natural remedy, caution is necessary.
Solutions made with high concentrations of baking soda or vinegar could potentially alter the soil pH levels, which is crucial for plant health. You wouldn’t want to harm your precious petunias in the process.
Lastly, if you’re pulling weeds by hand, do it purposefully. Aim to remove the roots of the plant to prevent future growth.
Simply pulling off the top leaves might solve an aesthetic issue, but it’s not a long-term solution.
