Instructions
Before preparing the dog food, soak the rice in water with whey or apple cider vinegar for several hours. After washing, strain the rice and measure the amount of water left. Set the rice and water aside for later use.
Press the Saute button on your Instant Pot. Add the ground meat and liver (if using) to the pot. Break up the beef and cook until it is about halfway browned. Avoid browning the meat thoroughly, as it will continue to cook with the rice and vegetables.
Once the meat and liver are partially browned, add the soaked rice and the measured cooking water to the Instant Pot, following the directions provided in this post. Stir the meat, rice, and water together until well combined.
Add the vegetables to the meat and rice mixture, but do not stir them. Close the Instant Pot and ensure the lid is locked and the vent is sealed.
Change the Instant Pot setting to Manual and set the cooking time to 12 minutes. When the cooking cycle is complete and the Instant Pot beeps, carefully turn the vent to release the pressure. Place a towel over the steam vent to protect yourself and your kitchen from any sputtering steam.
After the pressure has been released, open the Instant Pot and add the fruit (if using) and the coconut oil to the cooked ingredients. Stir everything together until all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
Store the homemade dog food in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months. This will ensure that your furry friend has a supply of fresh, nutritious meals ready to serve.
Notes
Transitioning your dog to a homemade diet should be done gradually, especially if it is currently eating commercial food, as it is much better for digestion.
Mix 1 part of homemade food with four parts of your pet’s food.
Slowly increase the proportion of homemade food while simultaneously decreasing the amount of commercial food over up to 2 weeks.
Introducing homemade food increases the likelihood that your pet will accept and enjoy the new diet.
A gradual transition also reduces the risk of digestive upset, which can lead to unpleasant messes for you to clean up.
