Equipment

  • Spiralizer
  • 13 x 9-inch baking dish

Ingredients

For the Fruit Base:

  • 6 Granny Smith apples spiralized
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the Apple Crisp Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup melted butter or coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Set the Oven Temperature: Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Prepare the Apple Filling:
Place the spiralized apples in a large bowl. Add the maple syrup, arrowroot powder, lemon juice, and ground cinnamon. Toss the mixture thoroughly to ensure the apples are evenly coated.
Transfer the apple mixture into a 13 x 9-inch baking dish, spreading it into an even layer. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  • Mix the Topping:
While the apples are baking, prepare the topping. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the oats, almond flour, coconut sugar, ground cinnamon, and kosher salt.
Pour the melted butter or coconut oil into the dry mixture, along with the vanilla extract. Mix well until the ingredients clump together.
  • Combine and Bake Again:
Once the apples have baked for 20 minutes, remove the dish from the oven. Use tongs to gently stir the apples, ensuring they are cooked evenly.
Spread the prepared topping evenly over the apples, pressing down slightly to ensure good coverage.
Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 25–30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  • Serve: Allow the crisp to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm, topped with whipped cream or ice cream, either dairy-based or non-dairy.

Notes

  • For a variation, consider using spiralized pears instead of apples, or include other fruits like peaches for added flavor.
  • If using thinner spiralizer settings, monitor the baking time as the apples may cook faster.
  • This recipe is gluten-free and can be adapted to a vegan diet by substituting coconut oil for the butter.
