Equipment

  • Bread machine with Basic/White program
  • 1½- to 2-pound loaf capacity pan

Ingredients

Basic Version – 1½-Pound Loaf:

  • cup milk
  • cup water
  • 1 tbsp butter, softened and cut into pieces
  • cups bread flour
  • 1 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
  • 3 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • ¾ tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp yeast

Basic Version – 2-Pound Loaf:

  • ¾ cup milk
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened and cut into pieces
  • 3⅛ cups bread flour
  • 1⅓ cups quick-cooking rolled oats
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • tsp yeast

Instructions

  • Add ingredients to your bread machine's baking pan in the order listed—starting with milk and ending with yeast.
  • Select the appropriate setting on your machine: “Whole Grain” or “Basic/White,” depending on your preferred crust and density.
  • Choose the correct loaf size (1½- or 2-pound) based on your ingredient list.
  • Start the machine and let it run through the full cycle.
  • When the bread is done, carefully remove the loaf from the pan.
  • Transfer it to a wire rack and let cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Quick-cooking oats are preferred as they absorb more easily during baking, producing a softer texture. You may substitute with regular rolled oats, but expect a heartier crumb.
  • For best results, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before adding to the machine.
